The two brothers Michael and Peter Fox have published another book looking at the history of Saddleworth through old photographs in this case many of which haven’t been published before. The book titled ‘Through an Edwardian Camera – A Portrait of Saddleworth 1900-1910’, looks at the decade from 1901 to 1910, during which King Edward VII occupied the throne, is one of the most interesting in the history of Saddleworth.
By drawing on the very best of the ‘Old Saddleworth’ photographic archive, contained within the authors collection they have aimed to portray something of the allure and fascination of Saddleworth during the Edwardian age – that brief gap between the end of Victorian England and the run up to the cataclysm of the 1st World War.

It was also one of the most photographed. For this we must thank the humble picture postcard. Used in the early 1900s in much the same way as today we pass messages by social media, the immense quantity of postcards sent produced a similarly huge demand for photographs to illustrate them.
The several photographers, both professional and amateur, who sought to satisfy this demand in Saddleworth have left us a rich legacy of images of its buildings, landscapes, and peoples as they were around 120 years ago.
By drawing on the very best of the ‘Old Saddleworth’ photographic archive, contained within the authors collection they have aimed to portray something of the allure and fascination of Saddleworth during the Edwardian age – that brief gap between the end of Victorian England and the run up to the cataclysm of the 1st World War.
